Alternative metal originated from the heavy metal. It became very popular in the beginning of the 1990s. Alternative metal can be characterized by really heavy guitar riffs. The edge of these riffs is kind of experimental, because it contains alternative lyrics. Alternative metal also includes more syncopation, unconventional technique. This genre uses a resistance to usual ways to heave types of music and fusion of different influences, which are not concerned to metal kinds of music.

The origin of the term
Some specialists argue that this term loses its categorization. This term determine performers, who play metal music in an alternative way. A lot of alternative metal groups developed on base of heavy metal and alternative rock. In the very beginning alternative metal depended mainly on the alternative rock music. American rock underground was a basis for almost all metal bands. Some alt-metal bands evolved from industrial, post punk, grunge and hardcore punk. Such metal performers did not create some clear stream. They just fused traditional metal streams and were experimented with forms. A lot of metal bands experimented. Thus, a bohemian aesthetic and performance art, Corrosion of Conformity were use by Jane's Addiction. The grunge was reformed by Soundgarden. Faith No More and Colour directed hip hop and funk to the alternative metal cover.
In the 1990s the movement of grunge aided to enlarge the audience for metal performers. Lollapalooza line-ups were founded by Jane's Addiction frontman Perry Farrell and were opened for metal groups such as Metallica. Alternative metal music became very popular in the 1990s, thus metal performers of 90s were determined as "alternative metal" bands.
A lot of new groups and performers appeared in that period and they had distinctive metal features. These metal bands created a lot of new waves. For example, System of a Down plunged into progressive rock stream, Nine Inch Nails and Ministry developed the industrial wave, Rage Against the Machine fused hip hop and post punk, and Helmet fused post hard core and jazz elements to create intense rock music.
The alternative metal bands progressed very fast and alternative metal became more patterned. New alternative metal bands such as Korn, Deftones, Faith No More, Fear Factory, Nine Inch Nails, Primus, Helmet, Rage Against the Machine and Tool gave alternative metal a new breath. For example, Korn utilized aggressive dissonance and downtuned riffs. Moreover, Just because of that Korn created new stream, known as nu metal. Alternative metal influenced on a lot of post-grunge bands such as Breaking Benjamin, Papa Roach, Hoobastank, Three Days Grace, Nickelback, Creed, Linkin Park, Alter Bridge, Hurt and 30 Seconds to Mars. Alternative metal is still evolving. Moreover, new alternative metal bands continue to appear.
