Anchorage formed in the beginning of 1990. Kai-Uwe Skerra and Heiko Nitsche planned to have a band on their own after the participation in several projects. In 1991 guitar player Kai-Uwe Saffran, lead vocalist Michael Liebetrau and female voice Angela Grahl joined the group. This ment to be the first official formation and in 1993 they sent a demo tape to Hyperium. Shortly after the signing of a record deal with Hyperium they began with the recording sessions for their debut album. "Tranquilly the Maelstrom Starts“ was released in 1994 and the press echo was mor than enthusiastic.
