After organist Hugh Banton and saxophonist David Jackson had left Van der Graaf Generator in 1976, leader Peter Hammill, in a typically eccentric move, replaced Jackson by a violinist, Graham Smith (formerly of Charisma folk-rock band String Driven Thing), called back original VdGG bass player Nic Potter, and shortened the band's name to Van der Graaf. This line-up produced the album The Quiet Zone/The Pleasure Dome.
